Grammar Snap: 때문에 and -기 때문에

In Korean, there are too many versions of "because" for me to count today.  However, 때문에 is the best generic one to choose when you aren't sure.  Here are the important things to know about it:

1. It can be used like, "때문에" like English speakers might say, "Just because".  It's equally informal and potentially impolite.

2. It is often used to end a sentence even though it's not supposed to.  "학교 때문에요". Just randomly add "요" to make it sound more polite.

3. Korean sentence logic goes like this:

First: The cause           학교에 나는 늦게 오기 때문에
Second: The effect       선생님이 화가 나요.

학교에 나는 늦게 오기 때문에 선생님이 화가 나요.

4. It can be used with past tense ㅆ like 왔기 때문에.

Grammar Snap: Verb + 은/는 Topic Marker

This is a very simple grammar point which becomes very stressful when it is poorly explained.  Here is the simple explanation I wish I had heard first.

V+은/는 marks the topic of conversation.  If you aren't changing the topic of conversation, don't use it.

If I say:

"이번 주에서는 나가..." then we are talking about what happened this week.

If I say:

"이번 주 나는..." then we are talking about me and what I did that took place this week.

It is important to note that 은/느 marks the TOPIC of conversation while 이/가 marks the SUBJECT of the sentence. This becomes confusing when the TOPIC of conversation and the SUBJECT of the sentence are these same thing.  To fully understand this concept you MUST read books as much as possible.

Korean Grammar: I thought so

KIIP GRAMMAR NOTES
동사/형용사 + 을 줄 몰랐다/알랐다 = I didn't know that would happen / I thought that would happen

Important Breakdown

동사/형용사 + = future tense
= a fact (marker has been dropped)
모르다/알다 + 었다 = something you didn't know/knew in the past

An awkward, but more direct translation that helps in some cases:
  • 난 너가 갈 줄 몰랐어요.        You were going is a fact I didn't know.
  • 난 너가 갈 줄 알았어요.        You were going is a fact I knew.

NaeNae Recommends : www.Lang-8.com

One of the hardest areas to work on when you don't have a Korean speaker in your home, is writing.  It's time intensive and you need immediate feedback in order to progress quickly.  The best place we have found for this, better than the classroom actually, is Lang-8. Below you will see an example of how your work is corrected, line by line, by different Korean speakers.  You will often get feedback in Korean or your native language.

Corrections

You can even friend me, Nae-Nae, at www.lang-8.com and let's learn together! It's nice to build community and support so we can all suffer and grow together.  This next year is my year of speaking and writing so it would be fun to have more people join me on the trek.  You can see how many mistakes I make even though I have a very solid grasp of grammar, I still struggle with the logic process and make many mistakes when I'm learning.  It's part of the process.

If you don't know where to start, here is a topics regularly used on the TOPIK and KIIP tests.  We highly recommend starting here if you are participating in either of these exams.

Past Tense

Since this can feel overwhelming.
I've divided the past tense into two sections:

Ending in consonants

Ending in vowels
