NaeNae Recommends: Favorite K-pop Translator "KookieCane14"

If you are looking for the best place to go for easy to read Korean and English subs for studying, KookieCane14 has the BEST Youtube channel.  This user used to also be known as KookieCane13 and there are all kinds of wonderful videos there as well.

The translations are usually spot on, and the Korean subs are very easy to read and follow.  Also a fan of the fact they don't only translate more than just the kiddy k-pop groups. For example I'm a little in love with K. Will and he has his own playlist. I could listen to Come to My Crib all day long.

Korean Grammar: I thought so

KIIP GRAMMAR NOTES
동사/형용사 + 을 줄 몰랐다/알랐다 = I didn't know that would happen / I thought that would happen

Important Breakdown

동사/형용사 + = future tense
= a fact (marker has been dropped)
모르다/알다 + 었다 = something you didn't know/knew in the past

An awkward, but more direct translation that helps in some cases:
  • 난 너가 갈 줄 몰랐어요.        You were going is a fact I didn't know.
  • 난 너가 갈 줄 알았어요.        You were going is a fact I knew.

NaeNae Recommends : www.Lang-8.com

One of the hardest areas to work on when you don't have a Korean speaker in your home, is writing.  It's time intensive and you need immediate feedback in order to progress quickly.  The best place we have found for this, better than the classroom actually, is Lang-8. Below you will see an example of how your work is corrected, line by line, by different Korean speakers.  You will often get feedback in Korean or your native language.

Corrections

You can even friend me, Nae-Nae, at www.lang-8.com and let's learn together! It's nice to build community and support so we can all suffer and grow together.  This next year is my year of speaking and writing so it would be fun to have more people join me on the trek.  You can see how many mistakes I make even though I have a very solid grasp of grammar, I still struggle with the logic process and make many mistakes when I'm learning.  It's part of the process.

If you don't know where to start, here is a topics regularly used on the TOPIK and KIIP tests.  We highly recommend starting here if you are participating in either of these exams.

1 인생에서 가장 행복했던 하루
2 내가 존경하는 사람
3 하지못한일
4 내가 취미로 배우고 싶은것
5 내가 가지고 싶은 능력
6 내가 돌아가고 싶은때
7 나의 장점과 단점
8 내가 가장 아끼는 물건
9 가장 기억에 남는 여행
10 내가 살고 싶은 집

A Look Back: Blog from when I started KIIP

So, it's started and it's not half bad.
Every Sunday for 8-9 hours I will study Korean
via the KIIP program offered by the Korean government.

These classes are free.

Yes, that's right.
If you take the KIIP program intro test,
you can learn Korean for free from fantastic instructors.

Here is what it looks like when you log in after you take your exam:

As you can see I'm in Beginner 2.
Now, don't let the term beginner trick you here.
Beginner 2 is taught entirely in Korean.
It means you are functional in the language,
but not able to do many advanced things.

After you find your level, they give you a list of places
offering up the courses you need
on different schedules
in different locations.

I chose the 9 hours every Sunday class.

The students and the teachers are all very nice.
The only language we have in common is Korean
so you must talk and listen or it's going to be pretty tough.
Right now, I'm studying with
two Chinese men and a Vietnamese woman
which has meant the insides scoop on great food.

Finally I know where to get amazing Pho.

That isn't the only perk
to studying with people from many countries.
In the past, it's been too easy for me to wuss out
and just fill in the holes with English.
In these classes I've gotta stick to my guns.
It's Korean or nothing.

Of course, the biggest benefit
to completing this language program
is that it gives you all 15 or more language points
for your F-2-7 points visa.

Yah, that's right.
If you go all the way through this program
and pass the language test,
no TOPIK exam results needed.
Go straight to 15 or more points.
BAM.

Blogs are your friend.
Read them again and again.
Read multiple blogs on the same grammar point,
then go read them again.

Extremely Reliable and Helpful.
So helpful I wish I could hug them.

Others's That Exist But Are Annoying to Use,
Yet I sometimes find randomly helpful

Will update as I find more.

Past Tense

Since this can feel overwhelming.
I've divided the past tense into two sections:

Ending in consonants

Ending in vowels
